Much is heard about all the bad foods and grocery purchases that end up on your tables and in our stomachs.
But as of late, I’m buying healthy alternatives I enjoy, and are filling. And, if I can be so bold, offer an air of quality and sophistication to my eating.
Orange juice, sliced bananas and strawberries blended to create a cool, refreshing homemade smoothie is a perfect way to start the day. And, as a snack alternative to sweets and junk food.
And, remember the pita? It’s a unique way to mix in a blend of lettuce, tomatoes, and other vegetables with a light inclusion of your favorite deli meat and shredded cheese. Two of those, a sliced orange as a dessert, and quality, bottled water can give you a full stomach at lunchtime; verses, two cheeseburgers, fries and a soda.
And, does anyone still use toothpicks?
Use them to make a plate of homemade hors d’oeuvres in your refrigerator containing any combination of: grapes, strawberries, melon, folded deli meat, vegetable, cheese cubed. A great snack alternative instead of a candy bar, cookies, pretzels or chips.
When you pick up a hand basket, or wheel a grocery cart, be sure to see the potential in your produce section. All kinds of appetizing opportunities await you, and they can be filling, too.
Do you have some small plastic ware in your kitchen? They can make for great short-term storage for sliced fruits and vegetables later to become a meal, or garnish.
Sliced watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, oranges, and more all can be contained for a short-term and grabbed along with a fork for an immediate, filling, healthy snack
Sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and more can be contained for a short-term and grabbed along with low-fat dressing, a fork and a plate for a salad.
Healthy food choices can be a craving, and appetizing!
